On Saturday, a Delhi court filed charges of attempted murder and criminal conspiracy against Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai, who allegedly attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a Jan Sunwai grievance meeting at her Civil Lines camp office in north Delhi this August.

The order was issued by Additional Sessions Judge Ekta Gauba Mann at Tis Hazari Courts.

The court rejected the discharge plea, saying the conspiracy was hatched in secrecy and warranted prosecution under serious offences.

The court observed that the victim, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, was not only a woman but also the serving head of Delhi. It noted that the accused, Rajeshbhai, breached her security cordon and assaulted her. “This clearly indicates that the accused approached the victim in a calculated and premeditated manner, intending to kill her,” the court remarked.

The court noted that the accused’s actions confirmed his intent, as he attacked the victim within seconds of speaking to her and attempted to throttle her with the aim of killing. “This demonstrates that Rajesh, with a calm and calculated mindset, came solely to assault the victim in order to gain notoriety by showing he could target not just a wOn August 20, the chief minister was assaulted during a weekly public hearing at her Civil Lines camp office.oman, but the sitting Chief Minister of Delhi,” the order stated.

The court also brought criminal charges against Rajeshbhai’s co-accused, Tahseen Raza, for allegedly conspiring with him and providing funds for his travel to the Capital.

Dismissing his discharge plea, the court held that Tahseen had secretly plotted the conspiracy and was therefore accountable to face prosecution for the same offences.

On August 20, the chief minister was assaulted during a weekly public hearing at her Civil Lines camp office.

Rajeshbhai, an auto driver from Rajkot, disguised himself as a complainant to gain entry to the venue but was quickly subdued by security personnel and placed under arrest.

Advocates Harry Chibber and Sidhant Malik, representing Rajeshbhai, argued that he was a dog lover who had been upset by the Supreme Court’s earlier directive to relocate all stray dogs to shelters.

In response to this argument, the court noted that the accused proceeded to assault the victim, who had no involvement in issuing the order.

The order stated that the law of the land ensures justice for every woman—whether a cooking help or the Chief Minister—by safeguarding them and firmly punishing wrongdoers.

HT earlier reported that the charge sheet, filed on October 18, claimed Rajeshbhai was allegedly enraged with Gupta for her supposed refusal to challenge the Supreme Court’s decision.

According to police, Rajeshbhai reached Delhi from Rajkot on August 19, a day prior to the assault. He stayed at the Gujarati Samaj guest house in Civil Lines and allegedly conducted a reconnaissance of the Chief Minister’s official residence in Shalimar Bagh as well as her Civil Lines camp office to examine the security setup.
