New Delhi reported 9,211 deaths from respiratory diseases in 2024, up from 8,801 in 2023, marking a continued rise according to Delhi government data.
Common types of respiratory diseases include asthma, pneumonia, lung cancer and Tuberclosis, often causing breathing related issues.
In 2024, circulatory diseases emerged as the leading cause of death in Delhi, followed by infectious and parasitic illnesses. The city’s overall death rate also recorded an increase.
Delhi’s total deaths rose to 1,39,480 in 2024, up from 1,32,391 in 2023. Of these, 85,391 were men, 54,051 were women, and 38 were classified under other genders. A total of 90,883 deaths were medically certified.
Delhi’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) showed slight improvement in 2024, dropping to 22.4 per 1,000 live births from 23.61 in 2023. IMR reflects the number of infants dying before their first birthday
Latest data shows 21,262 deaths in Delhi were caused by circulatory diseases in 2024, up from 15,714 in 2023. Common conditions include blocked arteries, strokes, and heart failure.
Official data shows infectious and parasitic diseases ranked as the second most common cause of death in Delhi in 2024, with 16,060 fatalities. Typically spread through contaminated food and water, these diseases saw a notable decrease compared to 20,781 deaths in 2023.
Delhi registered 3,06,459 live births in 2024, a decline of 8,628 compared to the previous year, according to official records.
Delhi’s birth rate fell to 14 per 1,000 people in 2024, down from 14.66 in 2023, while the death rate rose from 6.16 to 6.37 over the same period, according to official data.
Delhi’s population is projected to reach 2.65 crore by 2036. Official data also shows that 99.1% of children under five possess a birth certificate.
