IPL telecast banned in Bangladesh, government acts after Mustafizur Rahman issue
The Bangladesh government has imposed a ban on the telecast and promotion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the controversy involving national team pacer Mustafizur Rahman. The decision comes after Mustafizur was removed from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad in compliance with a directive issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a move that sparked widespread debate and reaction across Bangladesh’s cricketing community.
The administration has officially announced that all IPL-related broadcasts, promotions, and event coverage have been suspended with immediate effect and will remain on hold until further notice. In its statement, the government clarified that the decision was taken “in the public interest” and confirmed that the move had received approval from the appropriate authority.
The statement further noted that a formal request has been issued to halt the promotion and broadcast of all matches and events associated with the Indian Premier League (IPL) until further instructions are provided, according to a report by India Today.
The directive follows the Indian Premier League’s decision to remove Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad midway through the season. Bangladeshi officials stated that the move was communicated as an instruction from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and criticised the decision, saying it was taken without “any logical reason.”
The government order stressed that there was “no logical reason” behind the decision taken by the Indian cricket authorities, adding that the move had deeply distressed, shocked, and angered the people of Bangladesh, highlighting the strong public sentiment surrounding the issue.
