Government-backed Bharat Taxi adds 45,000 users daily and teases nationwide launch
A government-backed cab-hailing platform is rapidly gaining traction across India. Bharat Taxi, supported by the Ministry of Cooperation, has witnessed a significant surge in user registrations just days after its launch, with tens of thousands of new users joining every day. The app is now live on both Android and iOS, and early user experiences indicate that it is starting to compete with established ride-hailing services in the country.
45,000 Users Join Bharat Taxi Daily
The rapid growth of Bharat Taxi was highlighted by the official X account of the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India. According to the ministry, the app has surpassed four lakh registered users and has been adding roughly 40,000 to 45,000 new users daily over the past two days.
Currently, the app holds the ninth spot on the Google Play Store and thirteenth on the Apple App Store, while its driver-focused counterpart ranks twentieth on the Play Store. The ministry described this period as a lead-up to a wider nationwide rollout, framing Bharat Taxi as a key initiative within the broader “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” programs championed by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah.
Bharat Taxi: How It Works, Key Features and Safety Tips
Bharat Taxi was officially launched today by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah as a cooperative-based, government-supported alternative in India’s competitive cab-hailing market. The app emphasizes transparency and driver empowerment, featuring police-verified drivers to enhance trust and accountability.
For users, the interface is simple and intuitive, making city cab bookings quick and easy. Beyond rides, the app also offers additional services such as metro ticket bookings and rental options for trips lasting up to 12 hours. Setting up the app and creating a profile takes under a minute, requiring only a phone number and email address.
Safety is prominently highlighted, with in-app features that allow users to contact the police, alert saved contacts, reach a dedicated safety team, or trigger an emergency siren. While some of these features are similar to existing options on platforms like Uber, which allow live trip tracking for contacts, the effectiveness of Bharat Taxi’s safety tools will become clearer as more users engage with the app in real-world situations.
Bharat Taxi App: First Look and User Experience
Early hands-on experience with Bharat Taxi reveals both promise and areas that need refinement. While the app is easy to set up, requiring only a mobile number, name, and email, some features feel unfinished. Pricing, for example, occasionally seems higher than expected for a government-backed service, with inconsistencies like identical fares shown for AC and non-AC rides, suggesting minor bugs.
The platform’s standout feature is its driver-centric model, initially promising zero commission so that full fares go to drivers. Reports suggest a fee of up to 20 percent could be introduced later, but with plans to redistribute earnings back to drivers. Future updates aim to add dedicated pickup and drop points at airports and other transport hubs, similar to Ola and Uber.
Ultimately, Bharat Taxi’s success will depend on execution, including competitive pricing, balanced demand and supply, and consistent safety and reliability. With user registrations climbing rapidly, the app is off to a promising start in India’s mobility market.
