Delhi Weather: The capital has plunged into an intense cold spell as the season’s first cold wave set in during the first week of January. Chilling winds swept across the city on Tuesday, pushing temperatures down and making it one of the coldest days recorded so far this winter. The sharp drop in mercury, coupled with biting winds, left residents bracing against harsh conditions throughout the day.

Delhi Weather: Thick Fog Engulfs Capital, Visibility Drops

Fog returned to several parts of Delhi on Tuesday morning, leading to reduced visibility at multiple locations across the city. At Indira Gandhi International Airport, visibility fell to around 250 metres by 9 am, causing cautious operations. The situation eased as the day progressed and the fog began to lift.

Despite clear skies and the presence of sunshine, temperatures remained low and offered little relief. The cold became more pronounced after sunset. Meteorological officials attributed the conditions to icy winds and snowfall in the surrounding hill states, allowing colder air to sweep into the plains. Similar chilly and foggy conditions are likely to persist over the next couple of days.

Delhi Temperatures Below Normal

On Tuesday, the national capital saw daytime temperatures remain well below normal, with the maximum reaching 15.7 degrees Celsius—about 3.3 degrees lower than the usual average for this time of year. The minimum temperature was recorded at 7.6 degrees Celsius, marginally higher than normal by 0.7 degrees. Humidity stayed on the higher side throughout the day, ranging between 76 per cent and touching 100 per cent at certain hours.

Delhi Weather: Yellow Alert Issued

The India Meteorological Department has indicated that cold wave conditions are set to continue in Delhi over the next two days. Daytime temperatures are likely to remain around 15 degrees Celsius, while the nights could turn colder with the minimum dipping close to six degrees. In view of the prevailing conditions, a yellow alert has been issued for both days, urging people to stay cautious during the cold spell.

Delhi: Palam And Lodhi Road Coldest

Several parts of the capital witnessed particularly harsh conditions, with Palam emerging as one of the coldest pockets after recording a maximum temperature of just 13 degrees Celsius—around 5.7 degrees below the normal level. Lodhi Road was not far behind, registering a daytime high of 15.8 degrees Celsius, which also remained significantly below average.
