Vinay Tyagi, a history-sheeter, succumbed to injuries on Saturday morning at AIIMS Rishikesh, three days after being shot, allegedly by two former gang members.
Tyagi was allegedly en route to Laksar court on Wednesday when the police escort was stuck in a traffic jam. He sustained multiple injuries, including to his shoulder, hand, and chest, with organ damage that required ventilator support. According to police, his body will be released to his family after the post-mortem examination.

Police said the arrested accused, Sunny Yadav and Ajay Sain, were allegedly part of Tyagi’s gang and had committed several crimes with him.
Tyagi, who hailed from Muzaffarnagar and grew up in Meerut, faced around 60 criminal cases across several cities such as Haridwar, Ghaziabad, Delhi, and Dehradun. His record included serious charges like murder, attempted murder, extortion, and dacoity, in addition to cases under the Arms Act and Gangster Act. His criminal history began in 1985 with a kidnapping case. At the time of his killing, he was in custody for forgery and fraud.
According to Haridwar Rural SP Shekhar Chand Suyal, Tyagi’s decision not to divide the loot prompted the two men to harbour resentment and plan his murder.
According to police, initial findings suggest no broader gang involvement. In the aftermath, three officers who were accompanying Tyagi have been suspended on grounds of negligence. Sources reported that while Tyagi was shot at point-blank range, the others in the police vehicle escaped unhurt.

A source said the police were unable to respond as they carried long-range weapons, which proved ineffective at close quarters. The crowded area also prevented officers from firing back. Police added that both suspects hail from Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar and had earlier been imprisoned in a dacoity case allegedly involving Tyagi.
Police records show Yadav has a minimum of two cases against him, including one involving co-accused Ajay.
After their ties deteriorated, Yadav is said to have pursued Tyagi, conducting multiple recces with knowledge of his scheduled court appearance on Wednesday. According to police, a country-made pistol and a .32 bore firearm with three live rounds were seized.
Tyagi’s death followed months after his family accused authorities of framing him to protect other individuals. Their allegations were linked to a September incident of gold and silver theft worth ₹4 lakh from an acquaintance’s vehicle, for which Tyagi was allegedly arrested and subsequently moved in relation to another case.
Tyagi’s family responded by alleging that the charges were fabricated to frame him, claiming he had taken the entire loot with the intention of handing it over to the Enforcement Directorate. They further alleged there was a plan to kill him during his court transfer and accused Uttarakhand Police of involvement.
