Delhi Govt to Construct Flyover at Pankha Road to Ease Janakpuri Traffic
To tackle persistent traffic congestion in West Delhi, the Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed constructing a flyover at Janakpuri’s Pankha Road crossing. The elevated road will connect DESU Colony with Janakpuri D-Block, aiming to streamline vehicle movement and reduce peak-hour jams, officials stated.
The Pankha Road junction in Janakpuri is among the most crowded intersections in West Delhi, serving as a vital corridor for residents of Janakpuri and nearby localities. The road also provides an important link between West Delhi, New Delhi, and Delhi Cantonment through Cariappa Marg, making it a crucial route for daily commuters.
Officials stated that the PWD has drafted a proposal to hire consultants to assess traffic patterns, vehicle density, and overall congestion on the stretch. The department has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for this consultancy work. Sources added that the consultants will also examine alternate routes and submit recommendations on whether a flyover or an underpass would be the most effective solution to ease traffic on the busy road.
This corridor is crucial for residents in and around Janakpuri, linking them to IGI Airport, Dwarka, and Najafgarh on one side, and Delhi Cantonment, Dhaula Kuan, Hari Nagar, and Tilak Nagar on the other,” a PWD official said. “At present, the stretch experiences heavy traffic congestion, largely caused by illegal encroachments and unauthorized parking.
Officials noted that to escape traffic snarls during peak hours, many commuters divert to internal colony roads, which in turn leads to additional congestion at nearby junctions.
Education Minister Ashish Sood reviewed the situation last year and instructed officials to take necessary steps to resolve the problems affecting local residents.
“Pankha Road, Jail Road, and the surrounding areas of Janakpuri have seen little development over the past decade, with no major efforts to ease traffic congestion,” said Ashish Sood, the Janakpuri MLA. “Our government is now prioritizing these stretches to ensure smoother movement. This corridor is vital not just for Janakpuri residents but also for nearby West Delhi localities like Tilak Nagar, Hari Nagar, and Uttam Nagar,” he added.
The PWD is also preparing to undertake repairs on the Seelampur flyover in East Delhi, with an estimated budget of Rs 17 crore. Built in 2000, the flyover has developed cracks and weakened expansion joints, causing traffic to slow down, officials said. The department aims to restore the structure and ensure smoother vehicle movement once the repair work is completed.
