Victim breaks silence
A nursing student’s birthday gathering spiraled into disorder when Bajrang Dal members allegedly intruded and attacked her friends. According to the victim, the guest list included mostly Hindus with only two Muslims present. She emphasized that viral videos shared online were misleading, showing only fragments of the incident. Authorities later concluded that the ‘love jihad’ accusation lacked merit, finding no incriminating material during their inquiry.
Police confirmed that a total of ten individuals attended the birthday celebration, including five women, four men, and the host. Among the male guests were two Muslim youths, identified as Shan and Waqif. The gathering was held at a café in Prem Nagar to mark the occasion.
The café staff and guests remained silent, with no complaints registered until the disruption began.
Right-wing activists barge into café
According to police, members of Bajrang Dal went to the café after learning that Muslim youths were attending with a Hindu woman. The group forced their way inside, interrupted the gathering, raised slogans, and accused the two Muslim attendees of being involved in “love jihad.”
Clips from the scene reveal a charged atmosphere with loud exchanges and disputes. One recording shows police personnel working to contain the unrest, during which a short altercation occurred involving the woman student.
In Rajendra Nagar, Bareilly, a boy and a girl were having coffee at a café when Bajrang Dal members, accompanied by police, entered the premises. The raid caused chaos inside the café, with the couple accused of “love jihad” as slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” were raised.
Police move in, questioning begins
Authorities from Prem Nagar police station responded to the tip-off and brought the student and several others in for questioning. Initially, one Muslim youth was taken into custody, while the other departed from the spot and could not be traced right away.
Authorities confirmed that the student’s relatives, including her aunt in Prem Nagar, were informed of the developments. Police additionally contacted the families of the other participants to explain the circumstances and clear any confusion
Station House Officer Raj Bali informed PTI that the student resides in a hostel in Prem Nagar while pursuing a BSc Nursing degree at a private college. He added that the party was organised by the student herself and clarified that police found nothing objectionable during their inquiry.
Despite the inquiry findings, police initially filed a challan for breach of peace against Muslim youth Shan and café employee Shailendra Gangwar.
Police trace youth, issue challans.
Authorities later learned that Waqif, the second Muslim youth, had departed from the scene. Circle Officer First Ashutosh Shivam subsequently launched a search effort and managed to track him down.
The officer stated that both youths and the café staff member were issued challans on Sunday for disturbing the peace. He further confirmed that the situation has since been brought under control.
Police managed to persuade the right-wing group members who disrupted the party to leave the premises. No case was filed against them
The incident has sparked online debate, particularly after videos revealed police action against the students, while the activists responsible for the disruption faced no legal consequences. The case has reignited discussions surrounding “love jihad” allegations and the way such matters are addressed by authorities.
A birthday gathering turned into a distressing experience for young students, who maintain they were only meeting friends. Although police have stated that order has been restored, the incident continues to fuel debate over personal freedom, law enforcement, and public order.
